Why Electronics Recycling Matters

Old Electronics Should Not Be Treated Like Ordinary Trash

Computers, phones, printers, network equipment, batteries, and accessories contain metals, plastics, circuit boards, and other components that require more careful handling than ordinary household waste. Recycling helps recover usable materials, reduces unnecessary disposal, and keeps outdated equipment from piling up in closets, basements, offices, and garages.

Where Collected Electronics Go

SilverTech Assist does not dismantle or process collected electronics and does not represent itself as a Connecticut DEEP-approved Covered Electronic Recycler. Items are transported intact for responsible recycling. The receiving recycler will be identified on this page after a written delivery arrangement is confirmed.

Recover Useful Materials

Electronics contain materials that can be separated and returned to productive use instead of being discarded with mixed household waste.

Handle Risky Components Properly

Batteries, circuit boards, and damaged devices may need special handling. Tell Dan about damaged, swollen, leaking, or unusually hot batteries before pickup.

Clear Out Unused Technology

Free local pickup makes it easier to remove outdated devices without leaving them at the curb or storing them indefinitely.

Your Information & Privacy

Protect Your Data Before the Device Is Recycled

Recycling a device and protecting the information stored on it are two separate steps. SilverTech Assist does not need your passwords for a basic pickup and does not browse personal files as part of collection. Before pickup, choose the data option that fits the device and the sensitivity of the information.

1. Back Up Anything You Need

Save important photos, documents, contacts, tax records, business files, and other information before the device leaves your possession. Once a device is recycled, recovery may no longer be possible.

2. Sign Out and Remove Small Media

Sign out of important accounts when possible. Remove SIM cards, SD cards, USB drives, discs, and any other removable storage you want to keep.

3. Keep the Storage Drive

For highly sensitive computers, the simplest and safest choice is often to remove the hard drive or SSD and keep it. Dan can help identify or remove the drive if needed.

4. Request Data Help Before Pickup

If the device still works, Dan can discuss backup, reset, secure-erasure, or drive-removal options. These technical services are separate from free pickup and may be billed at the standard service rate.

Important Data-Safety Limitation

A software wipe may not be possible on a device that will not power on or has a failed drive. If you require certified destruction, a destruction certificate, or a specific compliance process, state that requirement before pickup so Dan can confirm whether it can be accommodated.

How Pickup Works

Four Simple Steps

1. Send the Item List

Call, text, or use the contact form. Include your town, the type and quantity of electronics, and whether any batteries are damaged.

2. Confirm Eligibility

Dan confirms which items can be accepted and discusses any items requiring a different disposal method.

3. Choose a Data Option

Back up and erase the device yourself, keep the drive, or request separate technical help before the scheduled pickup.

4. Schedule the Pickup

Choose an available pickup time. Do not leave electronics outside before the appointment unless Dan specifically confirms where and when to place them.

E-Waste Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is e-waste pickup really free?

Yes. Pickup of confirmed, eligible household electronics is free in Wallingford, Durham, Cheshire, North Haven, and Meriden. Data backup, drive removal, secure erasure, repair, or other technical labor is separate.

Can I leave electronics outside for pickup?

Only when Dan has confirmed the items, date, time, and placement. Do not leave electronics or batteries unattended without an arranged pickup.

Will you look through my files?

No. SilverTech Assist does not browse personal files as part of a basic recycling pickup. A password is not required for collection. Any data service is discussed and authorized separately.

What is the safest option for a computer with sensitive data?

Remove and keep the hard drive or SSD before recycling the rest of the computer. Dan can help identify or remove the storage device as a separate technical service.

Do you provide certified data destruction?

Do not assume certified destruction or a certificate is included. Tell Dan before pickup if you have a legal, business, medical, financial, or compliance requirement so he can confirm what can be arranged.

Can a business schedule electronics pickup?

Business-generated electronics are not part of the free household pickup offer. Contact Dan with an inventory, quantities, and data-handling requirements so acceptance, pricing, and recycling arrangements can be confirmed separately.
